A MaximusFPS guide
My GPU usage is low while gaming. Is something wrong?
Low GPU usage is not automatically a fault. A frame cap, V-Sync, a CPU-limited scene or a light game can leave the GPU waiting. It becomes worth investigating when FPS is below expectations and the low utilisation has no obvious explanation. Check the cap and active GPU before assuming you need an upgrade.
What to check first
- Look for in-game caps, driver caps and V-Sync limits.
- Confirm the game uses the intended GPU, especially on laptops.
- Check CPU behaviour, clocks and temperatures during actual gameplay, not a menu.
Likely causes and how to distinguish them
The GPU can only render work that the CPU and game engine supply. A busy main game thread may limit FPS while total CPU usage looks modest, because other cores are not equally busy.
Laptop power modes and thermal limits can reduce available performance. Conversely, low usage at a stable chosen FPS cap is efficient behaviour, not a problem that needs fixing.
Monitoring overlays can show different utilisation metrics. Check that you are looking at the rendering GPU and the relevant workload rather than a video engine or another adapter.
Diagnostic steps, in order
- Temporarily test without an unintended cap in a repeatable scene. Do not leave the PC running unlimited in a menu simply to push a utilisation number.
- Lower resolution while keeping the scene unchanged. Little FPS change can suggest a non-GPU limit, but confirm with clocks, CPU behaviour and repeated runs.
- On a hybrid-graphics laptop, check Windows graphics preferences and the manufacturer’s supported graphics mode. Do not force unsupported firmware changes.
- If clocks fall with heat or on battery, compare supported plugged-in settings and inspect cooling. If only one game differs, check its own settings and developer support.
Limitations and when help may be appropriate
A single utilisation percentage cannot identify every bottleneck. More GPU usage is not a goal by itself; useful goals are suitable image quality, stable performance and reasonable latency. Seek help when measured behaviour conflicts with the settings or when crashes and abnormal clocks appear.
Follow-up questions
Should I raise graphics settings?
You may have spare GPU headroom for better image quality, but heavier settings will not necessarily raise FPS and can add latency or reduce lows.
Is low usage proof of a CPU bottleneck?
No. A cap, power mode, loading stall or incorrect metric can produce similar symptoms. Test the alternatives before buying hardware.
