A MaximusFPS guide
Should I use an FPS cap, V-Sync, G-SYNC or FreeSync?
Use a cap when a sustainable frame rate improves consistency, and use supported VRR to match display updates to frame delivery within the display’s range. V-Sync manages tearing but can affect latency depending on the setup. The best combination depends on the game, GPU, monitor and your priorities, so follow the vendor guidance and test rather than adopting a universal cap value.
What to check first
- Confirm the display’s refresh rate, VRR support and supported connection.
- Check for multiple simultaneous caps in the game, driver or other tools.
- Decide whether your priority is tearing control, consistency or competitive latency.
Likely causes and how to distinguish them
Unstable unlimited FPS can vary in pacing and rendering load. A cap reduces peak throughput but can leave headroom and make delivery more consistent.
VRR synchronizes display refresh to incoming frames within supported behaviour. It does not repair a long CPU stall. Outside the supported range, presentation behaviour depends on the display and settings.
V-Sync and latency features interact with caps and VRR. A specific cap margin from another monitor or game is not a universal rule.
Diagnostic steps, in order
- Set the intended refresh rate and enable supported VRR using the NVIDIA or AMD/display instructions.
- Choose one reliable cap and compare a sustainable target with uncapped performance in the same scene.
- Test the vendor-recommended V-Sync arrangement for your VRR configuration and compare tearing, pacing and responsiveness.
- Repeat in your actual game, including demanding scenes. Record settings so you can reverse a combination that feels worse.
Limitations and when help may be appropriate
A cap cannot create missing frames, and VRR cannot eliminate every stutter or display-response limitation. Help may resolve conflicting settings, but should not promise one arrangement is ideal for all players. Measure local performance separately from ping.
Follow-up questions
Does VRR increase FPS?
No. It changes how the display synchronizes with the frames it receives. It does not increase the PC’s rendering capability.
Should I always leave FPS unlimited?
Not necessarily. Unlimited output can maximise throughput, but a sustainable cap may improve consistency, heat and latency behaviour on a particular setup.
