MAXIMUSFPS

A MaximusFPS guide

Why does my gaming laptop perform below expectations?

A gaming laptop can underperform because of battery mode, the wrong GPU, heat, a supported power profile or expectations based on a different model. Laptop components with similar names can operate under different power and cooling limits. Compare your exact laptop in a sustained workload, not a desktop GPU or a brief cold run.

What to check first

  • Use the manufacturer-approved charger and compare supported plugged-in operation.
  • Check the active GPU and the laptop maker’s performance/graphics mode.
  • Keep vents clear on a hard surface and watch clocks as the laptop warms up.

Likely causes and how to distinguish them

Battery and quiet modes often prioritise power or noise rather than maximum sustained gaming performance. The intended charger and OEM settings matter.

Hybrid graphics can route games differently, and supported MUX or graphics modes vary by model. Do not assume an external display bypasses the same path on every laptop.

Cooling capacity and room temperature affect sustained behaviour. An initially fast run that slows later is different from a stable hardware limit.

Diagnostic steps, in order

  1. Record the exact model, charger, mode, resolution and game settings. Repeat the same scene while plugged in under a supported mode.
  2. Check Windows GPU preferences and the OEM’s graphics settings. Restart if the supported mode requires it.
  3. Inspect vent obstruction and compare temperatures with clocks over time. Do not open or repaste the laptop without appropriate skills and warranty guidance.
  4. If performance is still abnormal, check official firmware/driver support for that model and report sustained measurements to the manufacturer or a qualified technician.

Limitations and when help may be appropriate

Software tuning cannot turn a laptop into a higher-power desktop or repair a failed fan. Physical maintenance is not a verified MaximusFPS service. Remote assistance may help check configuration, while internal cleaning or repairs require an appropriate hardware specialist.

Follow-up questions

Is lower performance on battery a fault?

Not necessarily. Many laptops limit performance on battery. Compare the manufacturer’s supported plugged-in mode before diagnosing a problem.

Should I copy another laptop’s power limits?

No. Cooling, firmware and electrical design differ. Use your model’s supported settings rather than forcing undocumented limits.
