MAXIMUSFPS

A MaximusFPS guide

High FPS but the game still feels choppy. Why?

High average FPS can still feel choppy when frames arrive unevenly, the display is configured incorrectly, or online movement is interrupted by network problems. An FPS counter summarises throughput; it does not show every delay between frames. Start with a frametime graph and your display settings instead of chasing an even higher average.

What to check first

  • Check the actual refresh rate in Windows, not only the monitor specification.
  • Compare the FPS counter with a frametime graph during the moment that feels rough.
  • Test a repeatable offline or training scene to separate rendering from network problems.

Likely causes and how to distinguish them

Frametime spikes interrupt motion even when most frames render quickly. Shader compilation, loading assets, background tasks and memory pressure can cause those spikes. Low-percentile FPS can reveal the slow tail, but the graph helps show when it happens.

Tearing and uneven presentation are different from a rendering stall. V-Sync, VRR and frame caps affect presentation and latency in different ways. A stable cap may feel better than an unstable maximum.

Rubber-banding with a steady frametime graph points toward networking. Higher local FPS cannot repair packet loss or an overloaded game server.

Diagnostic steps, in order

  1. Confirm Windows refresh rate and the monitor’s VRR setting. Check the supported GPU connection and mode before assuming variable refresh is active.
  2. Repeat a short route after the game has warmed up. Note whether spikes coincide with entering a new area, effects, downloads or temperature changes.
  3. Test a sustainable in-game FPS cap. Keep the graphics preset unchanged so you can judge pacing rather than image-quality differences.
  4. If the graph remains smooth but online movement jumps, check ping and packet loss and compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi.

Limitations and when help may be appropriate

A technician may help distinguish a pacing problem from an overloaded component. Game-engine stalls and display response limitations can remain even after good tuning. Do not treat smooth average FPS, low local input latency and a stable online connection as the same measurement.

Follow-up questions

Will lowering resolution always help?

No. It helps mainly when GPU rendering is limiting the game. CPU stalls, shader work and network issues may remain.

Can a higher-refresh monitor hide stutters?

It can show more frequent updates, but it cannot display a frame that the PC has not finished. Fix the frame-delivery problem as well as checking refresh rate.
